Part 1 Part2 Part 3

After almost four years the UFC returns to Canada and it does so with a tremendous event like UFC 289 , with a title at stake: the Brazilian Amanda Nunes will defend her status as bantamweight champion against the Mexican Irene Aldana in the main fight.

Nunes, currently the number 1 pound for pound in women’s mixed martial arts and for many the best in history, was going to make the third fight of her trilogy with Julianna Peña, but the fighter of Venezuelan origin had to withdraw due to an injury in ribs and Aldana, who was going to fight Raquel Pennington in mid-May, got her shot.

Nunes comes in with a record of 22 wins and 5 losses , but just one drop from 2015 onwards. That was her unexpected submission loss against Peña in December 2021, in a fall that he confessed even led her to think about his retirement. She then retaliated against Peña in July 2022 to regain the bantamweight title. Amanda is also the featherweight champion although she has not fought in the division since 2021.

Aldana, for her part, will seek to continue the incredible year of Mexican fighters in the UFC: the one from Culiacán has a 14-6 record , with four wins in her last five bouts and her last three victories by way of knockout. This is his first title fight.

The event will also feature a long-awaited fight between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush that was postponed at UFC 288 due to the Brazilian’s injury, but now we will finally see if it establishes its winner as the number 1 challenger in the lightweight division.

Here is all the basic information you need to know about UFC 289.
